Àlejò: Crossing Times is a book that explores the mysteries of Esu, a Yoruba deity. The prologue’s title, "Laaroye," caught my attention and made me curious about the book’s content. Using "Laaroye" hinted at a story about hidden tricks related to Esu’s eulogy—elékún sukún, Láaróyè ń sèjè—meaning, Laaroye is happy when mourners grieve. This made me expect a mischievous tale. The book tells the story of Alejos who appear in two different worlds they’ve never been to, interestingly.

The story follows two-time travelers who switch worlds. Ireti, appearing in two unfamiliar worlds, is introduced in a captivating manner. The book, written by Wole Olayinka, is set in Lagos City (the present) and Abule Olotoso (the past). This dynamic setting is made possible by Ileri and Bantele's appearances in these different worlds.

The writing style is worth noting. The prologue introduces Laaroye as a storyteller, allowing the writer to use third-person narration effectively. Laaroye tells the travelers' story with knowledge of what happened, providing an omniscient perspective. The characters, major and minor, are well-developed through their actions. The plot is complex, blending superstitious and real all at once. On the flip side, it's unclear if Laaroye tells a true story or simply tricks people.

Ileri and Bantale's time travel turns the impossible into reality, revealing stories of balance and hidden purpose. Bantale's journey from village to city hints at our history, while Ileri's connection to her grandmother adds depth to her mission. Fate's hand guides them both, they are warmly welcomed in unfamiliar places, showing us the power of destiny.

For those thrilled by the enigmatic aspects of the world and the intersections of fate and history, Àlejò: Crossing Times is a must-read. The book not only entertains but also prompts readers to reflect on the hidden connections that shape our lives. Whether you're familiar with Yoruba mythology or new to its elaborateness, this book offers a rich and engaging experience that will leave you pondering the mysteries of time and existence.

In light of its unique storytelling approach, well-crafted characters, and its ability to spark contemplation, I wholeheartedly recommend Àlejò Crossing Times to anyone seeking a literary journey that transcends time and space, inviting us to delve into the depths of the unknown and emerge with a new appreciation for the mysteries that surround us.

In conclusion, Àlejò: Crossing Times by Wole Olayinka is an appealing adventure of the mysteries surrounding the Yoruba deity, Esu. The detailed plot weaves together the experiences of Ileri, and Bantale, two time travellers who bridge the gap between different worlds. Olayinka's skillful writing style, highlighted by the narrative of Laaroye, the storyteller, lends an aura of genuineness to the tale. The balance between superstition and realism, the well-developed characters, and the seamless blending of historical settings showcase the author's prowess in crafting a thought-provoking narrative.
