The North East Youth Initiative for Development organised a series of capacity-building workshops for Civil Service and Community Based Organisations in Sokoto. 16 organisations including Book O’Clock were selected after assessing a ton of applications.

The workshops took place at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto from December 4 to Friday, December 8 and then moved to the Fiscal Responsibility Agency Conference Hall, Sokoto from December 9 — 11.

Representatives from Book O’Clock include the program manager: Mazeed Mukhtar Oyeleye and two active Book O’Clock volunteers: Abdulrasaq Zainab and Zariat Yetunde Ayoade. They were trained on management of community based platforms, media & information literacy and preventing and countering violent extremism in Sokoto.

The theme of the workshop was “Strengthening the Capacity of Organisations as a Tool for Sustainable Peace, Progress, and Stability.” The organisations, including Book O’Clock, underwent a series of sessions on how to understand violent extremism and prevent it as community based platforms. The sessions were facilitated by a range of guest speakers who equipped participants with the adequate information needed for the collective/individual prevention of extremism as well as management of NGOs as tools of advocacy.

Some of the topics discussed include: Extremism movement: Typology, Trait, and Target, facilitated by Dr. Nuradeen Bodinga; Project and Report writing facilitated by Mr. Daud Muhammad Gombe; Gender-based violence by Mr. Jibril Muhammad Binji; Community engagement and advocacy as a tool facilitated by Abu Sufyan Abubakar: Understanding violent erxtremism by Mr. Umar Sahabi; Communal fight against extremism by Dr. Mansur Isah Buhari; Human Resources management by Mr. Mubarak Adil; Organisation structure by Dr. Ahmad; media and information literacy by Mr Idris Muhammad; among other topics.

At the Closing Ceremony, participants were presented certificates and invited to share with one another what they have learnt.

Thanks to NEYIF for the opportunity. We look forward to further collaborations and effecting knowledge learnt, in our adoption of arts in activism and advocacy in Sokoto, northern Nigeria, Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
