Art as Protest: Prizes/Outfits that accept #EndSARS Protest Pieces
There are several ways to protest. You can either be on the street protesting or remain at home amplifying the voices of those protesting by writing about them or the cause. None greater than the other.
Are you a writer or a journalist and you’re looking to lend your voice to the timely #EndSARS protest? We’ve put together prizes and outfits you can submit your poetry, feature stories, essays and also pitch your ideas to. They include:
- #EndSARS Poetry Contest 2020
Nigerian poets are invited to submit poems of not more than 20 lines on police brutality and stand a chance of winning N25,000.
How To Submit:
- Post the contest flyer above on your Instagram page.
- Your 20 line or less poetry should be the caption of the post.
- Follow and tag @michaelafenfiafanpage to validate your entry.
- End your poetry with the hashtag #EndSARS.
The entries will be judged by award-winning poet, Flourish Joshua on the basis of truism and creativity, not likes. Deadline: 8 November 2020.
2. Reform Naija Writers’ Contest
Reform Naija is inviting poets and writers to submit articles of not more than 500 words and poems of not more than 20 lines on the theme, Freewill, but should revolve around the #EndSARS movement.
How to Submit:
- Attach your bio at the end of the piece.
- Entries should be in doc format.
- Mail it to reformnaijasubmissions@gmail.com
- The subject of the mail should be the genre of your submission + Title of your work. Eg. Poetry: END SARS.
- The body of the mail should contain the attachment of you entry as well as your bio; include your full name and social media handles.
Deadline: Friday, 16 October 2020.
3. Shuzia Pen Protest
Shuzia is inviting poets to submit poems of not more than 20 lines for their PenProtest #EndSARS Poetry Challenge and stand a chance of winning up to N20,000.
Poems should be satiric, with themes on police brutality and other related issues. Poems should be void of profane languages.
How to Submit:
- End your poem with #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality.
- One submission per person.
- Mail it as an attachment to writers@shuzia.com.
The top four submissions will receive N5,000 each. Deadline: 23 October 2020.
4. Palette Poetry
Palette Poetry in solidarity with the #EndSARS movement, is inviting Nigerian poets to submit 1 - 3 poems on police brutality in Nigeria and earn $50 for each accepted poem.

5. Praxis Magazine
Praxis Magazine has put out a special call for submission of essays and creative nonfictions. This is for their #EndSARS project: Documenting Words and Actions for Posterity.
Writers are invited to submit their essays and think pieces on the moment, the direction of these protests, and what, ultimately, it means to be living in Nigeria now.
Essays can range from 1000 to 2500 words.
How To Submit:
Submit your essay to editorial@praxismagonline.com with the title of the email as “#EndSARS Essays”. Attach work as MS Doc.
6. HumAngle
HumAngle — an African publication that covers conflict and insecurity in Africa through news, in-depth reports and analysis is inviting freelance or citizen journalists covering the #EndSARS protest to submit their reports, features, analysis to them for publication.

7. Talk Wetin Happen
Talk Wetin Happen is a digital house for Nigerian stories in the ongoing fight against police brutality. It is curated by Nigerian writer, TJ Benson.
As the name implies, Talk Wetin Happen is seeking for Nigerian stories about their daily experience in the ongoing protest. It doesn’t have to be a fully developed story, it could be just a summary of what happened which can also be sent as a voice note.
“It can be anything from food to love to violence of officers. Nothing is too trivial, treat it like a daily diary if you like. We are here to bear witness because we know what time does to memory #endpolicebrutality” Benson said.
